From 1 to 4 September, the track at Genk will be playing host to this year’s blue riband event in the flagship category of the 125cc gearbox karts, the KZ1 World Cup. The event will bring together the cream of the drivers from the speciality, as well as various official professional drivers whom the factories have deliberately steered towards the KZ1 this season.
Who is going to succeed the winner of the 2010 edition of the World Cup, which was held in Portugal? In fact, this laureate could even be the same one, given that Dutchman Bas Lammers is putting his prestigious trophy up for grabs. At Genk, he will be performing practically on his own doorstep and among the large numbers of fans expected to turn up for the event, he expects to see many of his own supporters.
Galvanised by the opportunity to race “at home,” three Belgian drivers must be considered among the main favourites: Jonathan Thonon, of course, whose record of achievements has already been greatly enhanced by three successes in this World Cup, and also Rick Dreezen and Yannick de Brabander, both of whom have proved themselves to be in top form in recent months in numerous international events.
Freshly crowned KZ1 European Champion, who raced to victory in the KZ2 European Championship in 2010, the Italian Paolo de Conto will also rank among the favourites, as will the experienced drivers Jérémy Iglésias, Marco Ardigo, Davide Fore, Arnaud Kozlinski, Anthony Abbasse and Thomas Mich. Others worth keeping an eye on are the revelation of the 2010 edition of the World Cup, the Finn Kurki-Suonio, and the Dutchwoman Beitske Visser, the fastest woman in the history of gearbox karting.
